Custome URL button

Hello,
 
I have created a custom button that will send an email to the "name" of the user in the field of a task.  I just wanted to know if there was anyway to also perform a field update once the email has been sent?

If the email is on a Case then you can use a workflow on Email Message to do a field update on the parent Case.  Otherwise the only way to do such a field update would be to make an Apex trigger on Activity.
