I believe that your issue is not code related. Lookup windows will display the most recently accessed records. So, if you have not visited any records for the object you have a lookup on, they will not display in the list of items to select.
Example: if your lookup is on the Opportunity object, but you have not viewed any Opportunity record with the current user, then no item will display in the lookup window.
