Cloud Swarm 3 - can I auto-follow lead records owned by certain users?

My Sales Director wants to follow all lead and opportunity records owned by certain users - is this possible?

With Cloud Swarm, users can only auto-follow all opportunities owned by direct reports.  They cannot select specific users to follow opporunities for.

A way around this is if I put my Sales Director's name on the user's  "manager" field in the user's profile for each user he wants to follow - correct?

As long as you're not using this field elsewhere (e.g. for approvals), that should do the trick.
