Opt-Out updating

Can the Excel Connector be used to take a list of email addresses that our newsletter system says have opted out, search for the address in Salesforce Contacts and then update the Opt-Out flag if it is found?
 
Or is there another way to do this?

You can certainly do this using the Excel Connector.  But I think it would be much easier to use the Import Wizards to update the "Email Opt-Out" field.  Simply import the file, match on email, and provide an "opt-out" column in the import file that says "True" or "1".

Hi Dave:

Did you get that to work?  I've just tried with a "test contact" and importing a CSV file with the test contact email and Email Opt Out set to 1 - but doesn't seem to work...

Any advice appreciated.

Peter, what you described should work.  If it doesn't you should contact salesforce.com support to get some help.
