Making a Living as an Independent Developer?

Can one make a living from building apps for the Salesforce AppExchange market, as an independent developer?

It would be nice to however unless you have a good app and your price is on par with what the user recieves compared to other competitive app's then go for it.

Starting out however you have to be careful not to copy other apps, even in the slightest ways. Not just visually, but how th code is written to make them work.

I have come across a couple of apps that looked good until i read the reviews, which said that it was a copy of another app. And then searching for that other app relieved that the original was similar but the reviews were good and you had to pay for it. While the copy app was free it was a copy and those apps should be used as we are really supporting the idea of steling IP(intellectual property).
