Chatter back up

I need to know, how Chatter is backed up by Salesforce and is it possible for us to back it up and store the data?
I also wanted to know how far back is the data available? (beginning of time or does it archive after so long)

Hello Ashish,

thanks for your help, i had one more question.

I wanted to know if there are any Chatter apps that help us manage hashtags/topics so they do not get out of hand and we can keep a running list.  Maybe we can even pull a report of all existing hashtags in our SF as of today?
