Trigger assignment rule

I am trying to create a trigger where when a salesrep goes into a lead it will automatically assign them as the lead owner.

What does going into a lead mean?
Does that mean when sales reps just opens the lead record, it should be assigned to him. If this is the case, i dont think this is possible using standard functionality. However, this might be possible using Javascript where you call salesforce API using the AJAX toolkit and thereby update the lead record.

Please let me know if i misunderstood.
