Why we are using @ Symbol before writing Annotations?

Hi All,

I am very very new to Annotations, but not new to Salesforce. Why @ Symbol before Annotations?(Annotations are defined with an initial @ symbol, followed by the appropriate keyword)

Thanks,

as there should be some way to define them....

@ is used in salesforce as it is comman way in many other languages like java...

not just annotations, when new technologies come most of the practices being followed in existing technologies that are required will be kept similar to help people who are migrating from those technoogies....
