Force.com Sites for standard Users

Is it possible to create a force.com site and authenticate standard users - I want to do this so I can rebrand the login screen and send the users to a VF home page after login.

No, sites can only authenticate portal/community users, so external licenses are required.

You can customise the login page to a degree if you are using MyDomain, see:

WRT redirecting to a Visualforce page, that will be tricky to guarantee, especially if users have bookmarked/deep linked to an existing page.  You could make the VF page the home page for all applications which would pick it up a lot of the time.
