"New" button in a Related List VF page.

I have created vf pages for a bunch of related lists so they can be moved around in the page layout. But the create "new" button on top of the page when clicked opens up the page within the vf page in the page layout section. How can I make it open in a new window? Is the related list a Custom Visualforce Component and the New Custom Button as well? If yes, you can use target attribute to open up a new page.
