Does Record Name Label do the function of ID?

Hello.
Could someone please explain what is Record Name Label. Does it do the role of Salesforce.com ID? In the examples, I saw that relationships are build on this field. If I create this field with type "text", should I create separate numeric index field?

Record name label is the unique identifier of the record but it does not play the role of salesforce.com id. The relationships are basically based on the ID's but as a reference they populate the record names instead of ID's.
