Profiles and Permission set

Hi folks,
Can anyone tell me what is profile and permission set and what is difference between profile and permission set

for  my understaning 

profiles              =    group of people/user/contacts

permission set     =   used to control those profiles people/user/contacts, 

for example

you have listing called bank.in that listing you can set permission for profile users who can view a filed data/field.

profiles/fields can be controlled using permission set.

In addition to this info, it may help to say that you do not need to use Permission Sets. They are optional. They are a relativly new function to Salesforce, and in theory help to organise certain permissions that you would usually add to the Profile. But, as I said, dont feel that you have to use them!
