Hi, Sairam, lots of great ways to learn the platform, especially if you are an exerienced programmer. And lots of opportunities once you master the basics.
Salesforce has a new learning system called Trailhead: developer.salesforce.com/trailhead
This will walk you through the platform fundamentals--it is extremely important that you understand the nature of the platform, object and field creation, etc.
Trailhead also has modules for advanced development after you master the basics.
If you subscribe to Pluralsight, they have several videos on learning the platform. Check them out.
If you prefer to read, their is a great set of workbooks to guide you through, in them you'll set up your own developer "org" for Salesforce (free), to test and code in. See here: https://developer.salesforce.com/page/Force.com_workbook
If you prefer videos, there are a tremendous amount of one to two hour long trainings from the last Dreamforce (the big Salesforce user conference): http://www.salesforce.com/dreamforce/DF14/sessions.jsp
Search for: Hands-on Workshop: Introduction to Development on Force.com for Developers
Good luck and welcome to the community!
