Can we change Opportunity tab layout ?

i want to remove this button from opp tab layout and want to add some custom button, as we can do in list view .

Adding a custom button is easy as evidenced by this answer (https://developer.salesforce.com/forums/ForumsMain?id=906F00000008tGKIAY).
Removing the "New" button is harder and is often accomplished by using javascript hacks (like so (http://salesforce.stackexchange.com/questions/1308/is-it-possible-to-remove-hide-the-new-button)).

Adding points to Scott. If we add Java Script it will be invisible to all user. or if you want to can simple override the new button functionality by using extension as well.
