How to optimize individual page layout?

Hi there - ever since we enabled Chatter, we've sometimes found that it takes a lot longer to load objects in SFDC. I reached out to Salesforce support and they said it may be solved by optimizing the page layout using SOAP API & visualforce integrations. I have no idea where to start. Do you have any tips for non-developers on how I can look into a resolution or where I can go for help on this? Thanks so much!

Thanks for the details.

Do you have your Salesforce integrated with any third party tool or is your object page layout has Visulaforce pages which is fetching some data from any external system ? If it is then what happens is, if it's taking time to fetch data then that time will get added for a page to load.

Thanks Pratik! We do have a few third party apps that get loaded onto the account object. Is there anyway to try and optimize the page layout without removing the apps?
