Client secret for app with Salesforce api only

If I only plan to integrate Salesforce Api, should I just choose this option when list the app?

"
What kind of application are you listing?
Your application is not a package and only uses the Salesforce API
"

If I only choose this, should I still create a connected app? If I don't, where can I get the client secret for Api access?

I chose to create a connected app instead and submit for security review. Then I will make it public listing. The reason to list publicly is to allow APIs access for group and professional edition.

Hi. Connected app is suggested as best practice as it would help you control the connectivity from your salesforce org. Though that is not a requirement to connect to the API, you can connect by using your username, password and security token as well. Though oAuth won't work and you would need to authencitate everytime.
