Saleforce User Licence Issue in Recruitment App

Hi,

Working on the recruitment app. I am having issues with salesforce user licence. Since they provide limited user licences, on page 187 of the app work book, they tell us to login in as different users and test their permissions etc. However, they need salesforce user licence and we run out of it. Then only options are salesforce platform user licence. But this does not work with the permission sets for example. With this option only profile we have access to is "standard platform user".

Is there a difference between standard user and Standard platform user profiles?

Any idea how I can work around this limitation?

Also, I set up the roles and hierarchy. I has set up roles before and now it is gone. Any idea why this happened?

Salesforce free developer edition comes with limited Salesforce license. Standard User and Standard platform user license has limited functionality and will not be suffice for your learning.

Easiest solution to your problem is get a trial org here https://www.salesforce.com/sales-cloud/overview/. It will be active for 30 days with 20 SF licenses.

Recruiting app

Hi,
I am creating recruiting app using a following book
http://www.salesforce.com/us/developer/docs/fundamentals/salesforce_creating_on_demand_apps.pdf
in its security and sharing data section i would like all the users profile to be salesforce employee. however, while i am trying to do it says License Limit Exceeded. Is it because i have a limited user permission in developer edition. 

I'm not able to implement this because of inconvience in providing premission sets to profiles in users. 
Transfer Requires ReadThe new owner must have "Read" permissions on this type of record.
