a. Users are given access to the records owned by the users who are below them in the role hierarchy

please consider the following reason:
B is not possible, siblings don't share records as they are the same level on the hierarchy.
C is not possible, users sometimes have visibility on records they don't own through permission sets, if the user above the role hierarchy doesn't have the right permission, he won't be able to view the record.
D is not possible, of course, users below the hierarchy won't be able to view records accessible by the users above them.
