Peter Cowen adding a 'on hold' action on approval process
Is it possible to add an additional step to an approval process.
The standard is to either approve or reject but it might be useful to have a option for the approver to place the approval in a 'On Hold' state to request additional details by the submitter rather than rejecting it for additional details to be added and resubmitted

I Don't think you can do this with the standard approval process.Please refer below link for the status of the approval process.

After some research, I found that we could write our own approval process for this purpose please refer below link where it has some sample code.
