Button that will update field and invoke/trigger workflow

Hi All,

I have a requirement where on click of a button I need to change the picklist field value to submitted and invoke/trigger a workflow which would push the data to target application.

How do I configure this button? Do I need to write any java script or is there any other way out? Kindly help
