Flow to create new Account - why does the phone number format not work?

I created the sample flow from "Collect Information from Users and then Operate on It with Visual Workflow" exercise , just (2) fields, Account (Text) and Phone (Number). The flow works and will create a new Account record but the phone number format is wrong ( see screen cap attached). Is there a way to fix this?

Same issue - I've spent over an hour testing different fixes but it still is not working correctly.  I'm perplexed.

Hi Steve, I posted this a couple of other places and finally got a response, apparently with the flow tool because it doesn't offer the "Phone" format what you see is what you get - best suggest was to use a workflow to trigger a formula field to correct the formatting error.

Curious... Is there a way to set input masks on the fields? 
Also, it would be nice if we could set a field to read-only in the Flow Designer, when needed.
