UNKNOWN ERROR: EXTERNAL_OBJECT_UNSUPPORTED_EXCEPTION:  "This query syntax is not supported by this external data source"

I setup Files Connect (https://releasenotes.docs.salesforce.com/en-us/spring16/release-notes/rn_files_connect_box_pilot.htm)
for BOX. After finishing setup I am able to sync to BOX and able to generate "items_Box_Data_Source__x" external object. but when i query on this onbject i get following error - UNKNOWN ERROR: EXTERNAL_OBJECT_UNSUPPORTED_EXCEPTION:  "This query syntax is not supported by this external data source"

Any idea what could be causing this?

I am also seeing this problem after following the steps to enable Google Drive Files as External Objects in the Lightning experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
