Add Field to Notes

I'm trying to import legacy data and the Notes (and Attachments) seems to be the most logical area to put my data, but I need to create a new field in the Notes related object.  Is that even possible?  Should I just make a custom object as an Account child object?

Customer Portal: CAnnot view Account

Hi,
 
I have created a customer portal in my developer account.
 
When I am logged in as the Contact from the account, I click on the Account tab and I get an Insufficient Priviledges message.
I am using the standard Customer Portal Profile and I cannot understand why this is happening.
 
Any suggestions????
