I have to delete many custom fields in Production, Please advice me a safe way to follow before deleting the fields.
I think I have to manually delete them from Procduction, I cannot use change set, Am I correct?
I plan to create a backup file in Force IDE and data export before deleting the fields in Production. is there anything else to do?

I want to delete 500+ custom fields. Is there any solution to mass remove custom fields? I have tried with metadata Api using below code. But it gives me below error.

Error status code: INVALID_CROSS_REFERENCE_KEY
Error message: In field: members - no CustomField named Custom_Field__c found

I am trying to mass create 160+ custom fields on a custom object in my Sandbox. I was able to edit the meta data using Eclipse, but nothing happens when I deploy or save the changes to the Sandbox server.  I don't get any error messages, but none of the fields get created.  Does anyone know why this is happening?  Thanks.

is it possbile to delete custom fields from a custom objects by using the metadata api in eclipse ? 

Currently when I do this, the .object files is refreshed with the previous content.
