Custom Object Query

Why cant we do “select Name, Id from CustomObj__c where Id ='xyz5748'

I know “Id” is inherited from sObject, but we still should be able to query on that.

What version of Axis is supported?

Just starting on SF development, I was wondering what version of Axis should I use. I would like to use the version that was used to write the samples at this website.

Is this the version I should use: http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.cgi/ws/axis/1_4
